Kanara Catholic Welfare Association, Hyderabad organises AGM 2024 & Monthi Fest

The Kanara Catholic Welfare Association (KCWA) in Hyderabad recently celebrated Monthi Fest, a cherished tradition that beautifully blends faith, cultural heritage, and community spirit. This vibrant celebration, held on September 15th at St Mary’s Chapel in Trimulgherry, served as a testament to the enduring strength and unity of the Kanara Catholic community in the twin cities.

A Legacy of Togetherness

The roots of KCWA can be traced back to the 1970s when Mangalurean families in Hyderabad and Secunderabad began gathering informally for potluck meals, picnics, and social events. These gatherings fostered a sense of camaraderie and shared identity among those who had migrated from the Mangalorean coast. Recognizing the importance of preserving their language and culture, a group of enterprising individuals, under the guidance of the late Fr Henry D’Souza, took the initiative to formalize this community in 1998. Thus, the Kanara Catholic Welfare Association was born, with the aim of keeping the Konkani language and Mangalurean traditions alive among its members and their families.

Beyond cultural preservation, KCWA also plays a crucial role in supporting its members through various welfare activities. The association extends assistance to those in need, providing financial aid, medical support, and educational resources. This commitment to the well-being of its members has solidified KCWA’s position as a pillar of support within the community.

Monthi Fest: A Celebration of Faith and Gratitude

Monthi Fest, also known as the Feast of the Nativity of the Blessed Virgin Mary, holds special significance for Mangalurean Catholics. It is a time to express gratitude for the blessings of the harvest and to honor Mother Mary. This year’s celebration commenced with a solemn veneration of the statue of Infant Mary. The air was filled with devotion as the community joined together in singing traditional Konkani hymns, their voices echoing the deep-rooted faith that binds them.

Adding to the auspiciousness of the occasion was the presence of Fr Harold Mathais, a Konkani-speaking priest from Pilar Seminary in Goa. Fr Mathais, who shares the Mangalurean heritage, celebrated the Holy Mass in Konkani, further strengthening the connection to their cultural roots. His inspiring homily resonated with the attendees, emphasizing the importance of faith, community, and preserving their unique identity.

The vibrant procession, with children leading the way and carrying offertory items, added to the festive spirit. The chapel was filled to capacity, with many attendees standing on the verandah to participate in the Mass, demonstrating the strong community bonds and the importance of this celebration.

Annual General Meeting: Reflecting on the Past, Planning for the Future

Following the Mass, the association held its Annual General Meeting (AGM). Outgoing President Alwyn Menezes warmly welcomed the gathering and highlighted the grand success of KCWA’s Silver Jubilee celebration, which took place on December 10, 2023. The unveiling of the association’s new logo, designed by Anna D’Souza, marked a significant moment, symbolizing KCWA’s continued growth and evolution.

General Secretary Stany Mendonca presented a comprehensive annual report, outlining the association’s achievements and activities throughout the year. Treasurer Norman Bennis provided a detailed financial report, ensuring transparency and accountability. Vice President Ashley Coelho led an open house session, encouraging members to share their thoughts and suggestions for the future. He also presented draft plans for the upcoming year, focusing on initiatives to further strengthen the association and its impact on the community.

The AGM concluded with elections for office-bearer and managing committee positions. Ashley Coelho was elected as the new President, ushering in a new era of leadership for KCWA. Notably, more than half of the newly elected managing committee members were young individuals, signifying the active involvement of the younger generation in carrying forward the association’s legacy.

A Day of Joy and Camaraderie

While the AGM took place, the children were engaged in fun-filled games and entertainment, organized by Renita Abraham and Anna D’Souza. This thoughtful gesture ensured that the younger members felt included and entertained throughout the day.

KCWA’s commitment to education was evident in the merit awards ceremony. Children of members who had excelled academically, achieving more than 75% in their exams, were recognized and presented with medals and certificates. This gesture not only celebrates academic excellence but also encourages and motivates the younger generation to strive for success.

The celebration continued with a delectable lunch served to all attendees, fostering a sense of shared enjoyment and camaraderie. The atmosphere was filled with warmth and laughter as members engaged in lively conversations, reminiscing about shared experiences and forging new connections.

The afternoon resonated with the melodious sounds of traditional Konkani songs, sung with passion and enthusiasm. This heartfelt singing brought back cherished memories and reinforced the cultural ties that bind the community together.

The excitement reached its peak with a thrilling game of tombola, expertly conducted by Loydon Mendonca and his team. The lively atmosphere, filled with anticipation and friendly competition, brought the day to a close on a high note.

A Vibrant Community, A Promising Future

KCWA’s Monthi Fest celebration was a resounding success, showcasing the strength, unity, and vibrancy of the Kanara Catholic community in Hyderabad. It was a day filled with faith, cultural pride, and joyous camaraderie. The association’s dedication to preserving its heritage, supporting its members, and fostering a sense of belonging ensures that the unique identity of the Kanara Catholic community continues to flourish for generations to come.
