KCWA holds Monthi Fest celebrations in Hyderabad

The Mangalorean community in Hyderabad and Secunderabad has a rich history of coming together. Starting in the 1970s, they would regularly hold informal gatherings, potlucks, and picnics. This sense of community led to the formation of the Kanara Catholic Welfare Association (KCWA) in 1998, under the guidance of the late Fr Henry D’Souza. The association, which went through a few name changes before its final registration, aimed to preserve the unique culture and language of the Kanara Catholics, while also providing support to members in need.

Today, KCWA continues to thrive, hosting four key events annually. These include the Monthi Fest celebration, a Mass for departed souls, a fun-filled picnic, and a Mass for the children’s academic year.

This year’s Monthi Fest was a particularly vibrant affair. It commenced with the veneration of Infant Mary’s statue and the blessing of new paddy, accompanied by traditional Konkani hymns. Fr Praveen and Fr Lancelot Menezes, both Mangalorean priests fluent in Konkani, graced the occasion with their presence.

The celebration continued with a procession of the statue to the church, with attendees singing devotional hymns in adoration of Infant Mary. The Mass itself was a beautiful service conducted in Konkani, featuring melodious hymns and an inspiring homily by Fr Praveen. The sight of young children leading the offertory procession added a touch of innocence to the ceremony. The overwhelming attendance underscored the strong community spirit, with many attendees standing on the verandah to participate in the Mass.

Following the service, refreshments were served, and the attendees gathered for the Annual General Meeting (AGM) in the church’s community hall. President Alwyn Menezes warmly welcomed everyone and announced the exciting plans for KCWA’s silver jubilee celebrations in December. The AGM proceeded with reports from General Secretary Stany Mendonca and Treasurer Norman Bennis, followed by an open house session led by Vice President Ashley Coelho, who shared insights into the upcoming silver jubilee festivities.

To keep the younger members engaged, Rachita D’Souza and Anna D’Souza organized games and entertainment while the AGM was underway. The association also recognized the academic achievements of its young members, awarding medals and certificates to those who excelled in their studies.

The day culminated in a delightful lunch featuring traditional Mangalorean dishes lovingly prepared by association families. The festive spirit continued with a lively singing session led by Florence Mascarenhas and friends, followed by an exciting round of tombola organized by Mercy D’Souza and team. The celebration concluded on a high note, leaving everyone with cherished memories.
